Order State Errors

Rates and Label purchase are not gated by Order status

Unlike an earlier version of this page, Get Shipping Rates has no Order-status precondition at all, and Buy a Label only rejects an Order that is already Cancelled, already LabelCreated, or Returned — Packed is not required. The only endpoint that enforces a status transition graph is PATCH /api/v1/orders/{orderId}/status itself.

Verified status codes

Situation	Status
Order does not exist for your account	404
Requested (previousStatus, status) pair is not a supported transition	409
Order is already Cancelled, already LabelCreated, or Returned at label-purchase time	400

Recover safely

Retrieve the latest Order state before changing it or continuing the workflow. Correct the target status rather than repeating an identical invalid transition — see Update Order Status for the full supported-transition table. See also Order-to-Label Workflow.
